Despite the fact that there are already 15 airports in operation in each region of the country, 11 of which are not in demand and are accumulating huge chronic deficits, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport is once again planning and promoting plans to build 10 more airports in various parts of the country. It's hard to believe that the government's plans are being made in the face of the imminent threat of climate collapse and biodiversity loss, all under the guise of revitalizing the local economy. Instead of reducing airports and restoring ecosystems, trillions of taxpayer dollars are being funneled into private capital to reclaim irreplaceable tidal flats, carve up mountains to fill seas, and cut down forests to build more airports.
Moreover, the locations of the new airports, such as Saemangeum New Airport, Jeju 2nd Airport, Gadeokdo New Airport, and Gwangsan Airport, are all located in migratory bird migration areas, which not only causes ecological destruction, but also raises the risk of aircraft-bird collisions. The risk of bird collisions at these new airports is much higher than that of existing airports, and is even up to 610 times higher than that of Muan Airport, where an actual bird collision occurred.
The National Coalition for New Airports will be launched by the New Airport Task Force and environmental organizations in each region to expose the fiction of new airport plans in each region, which are ecocide that accelerates climate and ecological collapse and are used solely as political tools to gain profits and local votes, and to withdraw unnecessary new airport projects. On February 10, 11:20, we will hold a press conference in front of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport. We would appreciate it if you could join the press conference and show your support!
