"Judge the general election by overruling the second airport, do business!" Cries to the 22nd National Assembly
Jeju 2nd Airport to be forced to close, Jersey Emergency Residents' Assembly to hold resolution meeting on 18th
With the election of the 22nd National Assembly wrapped up, voices have emerged in Jeju calling on the new National Assembly to stop the construction of the second airport.
The Jeju Residents' Assembly for the Prevention of the Second Airport (hereinafter referred to as the Residents' Assembly) held a rally in front of Jeju City Hall at 7 p.m. on the 18th, calling on the 22nd National Assembly to listen to the voices of the people and cancel the second airport.
"The issue of pushing for a second airport was an important judgment in the process of this general election, and it was clearly judged," said the Residents' Assembly. "The proportion of support in Seogwipo City, which was thought to be overwhelmingly in favor of the second airport, fell to the 50s. The fact that it is an unnecessary project has been repeatedly confirmed."
"Moon Dae-rim and Kim Han-kyu acknowledged the need to review the demand forecast that is the basis for the expansion of the second airport, and agreed with the need to review it, including alternatives other than the second airport." "They also expressed their support for MOLIT to conduct a referendum and amend the Referendum Act to allow local governors to ask residents whether to proceed with national projects."
On the other hand, "President-elect Won Sat-gon, who has been in and out of office for the past eight years, has been openly in favor of the construction of the second airport and has not offered any solution to the referendum, even though he said that conflict resolution is a priority."
"He is not concerned about the future of Jeju Island, but only about his own political interests and glory," the group said. "Moreover, he has not even apologized to the residents of the affected areas who are directly affected and suffering from the second airport plan, even though he has actually driven a nail into their chests."
"President Yoon is trying to push ahead with the construction of the second airport despite the fact that the majority of Jeju Islanders oppose it," the group said, adding, "He even passed the Strategic Environmental Impact Assessment, which was rejected by the previous government, as a 'conditional consent' and is pushing ahead with the basic plan notification process, even though environmental research institutes have pointed out that it is unsuitable as an airport location."
"We demand that the 22nd National Assembly, including the three elected representatives from Jeju, fully recognize this situation and stop the Yoon Seok-yeol government's abusive push for a second airport."
