The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport is now openly lying. This is truly outrageous. According to multiple media reports, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport explained to reporters before the announcement of the basic plan for the second airport, "We have held many discussions in front of the people of Jeju Island, and through such discussions, the ratio of 8 to 2 in favor of the second airport has improved to about 5 to 5."
This is an outright lie. In 2015, when the first airport development plan was announced, the number of people in favor of the second airport was over 70%, while opposition was in the low 20s. Opposition to the second airport has continued to grow since the second airport pre-feasibility study review committee was set up, which revealed numerous irregularities, lies, and even hiding the results of services to improve Jeju Airport infrastructure. Furthermore, the opposition to the second airport has remained overwhelming as the Ministry of Environment rejected the proposal due to numerous questions and suspicions, such as the risk of bird collisions and the conflict between protecting migratory bird migration sites, the evaluation of the preservation value of human skeletons, and the possible existence of lava caves.
Even now, a large number of residents not only question the necessity of the second airport, but also express strong opposition to the promotion of the second airport, worrying about the environmental impact of Jeju, including the climate crisis. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport has completely distorted the situation and published false facts in the media, as the public opinion in favor of the second airport has been reversed by the confirmation of various problems, suspicions, lies, and corruption.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport has repeatedly promised to respect the public opinion of Jeju Islanders and not to do any project that is not welcomed unless the public opinion is confirmed in favor of the second airport. For that reason, this falsehood can only be described as an admission by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport that the public opinion of Jeju Islanders is necessary for the announcement of the master plan.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport must own up to its wrongdoing and apologize to the people of Jeju Island for this falsehood. Furthermore, MOLIT should immediately fulfill its promise to collect and respect the public opinion of Jeju Islanders as it has consistently promised to do! To do this, it should immediately withdraw the Basic Plan Notice and hold a referendum! We strongly warn the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport!
